Luka the Arctic Zora

Description

//Here’s a Zora character I’m designing for an RP and he is some mix of both the Zora designs from OoT and TP since both of them have neat qualities. This is all I’ve got for now, please feel free to point out contradictions or things that don’t make sense. I’m still working on this and would be grateful for help or suggestions.

—————-

His name is Luka and he is from a very rare race of Arctic Zora. They have dark skin (scales?) to blend into their rocky environment and have a horn that varies in size depending on gender and age that is used to scrape away the thick layer of ice on the water to gain access to air. They need air to fill their swim bladders and occasionally to breath if the oxygen level in the water is particularly low.

These Zora live in large communities of their kind, governed by a mating pair. They live in cave systems under the land masses and in underwater caves that are connected by tunnels both natural and constructed.

Arctic Zoras mate for life so they are very careful about choosing a partner and engage in a ritual ceremony that they believe binds their spirits together for eternity and will link their souls even after death.

Arctic Zoras have both sets of reproductive organs, though an individual only has on predominant gender, in general, will only have one working set of genitals. However, each sex of Zora has the ability to change to the opposite sex when it is necessary to keep their species alive. Say if, for some reason, females were dying out or fewer and fewer were being born, some of the males brains would begin to signal their bodies to produce more estrogen and less testosterone and their main female organs would begin to function while their male ones would become inactive.

I don’t know about other Zoras, but Arctic Zoras mate while in motion. They preform a sort of courtship dance in which they spiral around one another and swim around together until finally becoming connected. (I based this off of dolphins). A female will carry her clutch of eggs inside of her for several weeks, as the water is too cold for them to survive until they develop a protective shell, before laying them (about 5-8 in a clutch) in a crevice or grove that her and her mate either find or dig with their horns in the rocks. The mating pair will guard the eggs until they hatch into small tadpoles and then care for them until the hatchlings are able to care for themselves.

Zoras can reproduce about once every two years, but will often for pleasure as it binds them even closer to their partner. Though this much more personal act takes place in privacy.

It is not uncommon for these Zoras to choose a partner of the same sex and it does not affect the bonding ceremony or even the possibility of reproduction. If the pair wishes to bare young, they simply need to seclude themselves from the rest of their colony and in time one will shift to the opposite sex. Upon giving birth and re-entering society, the Zora that shifted will return to their original sex.
